Shonen Jump mentioned something to this extent in one of their articles. It's been used in titles of various anime sequals such as "Galaxy Angel Z" and "Powerpuff Girls Z." So I believe it. FIREFOX Favourite Manga Dragon Ball	i remember hearing a long time ago that it represents all the characters getting to their strongest forms and potential. z is the final letter in the alphabet which is a metaphor for characters reaching their final form or highest level of strength.
